Hoiles to Step Up as Giltinis Head Coach in 2022
The LA Giltinis are delighted to announce Stephen Hoiles as the club’s new head coach for the 2022 season as the strong baton change from Darren Coleman.
Hoiles, 39, has partnered Coleman from the club’s first formative steps to establish the Giltinis’ enviable playing roster, team culture and standards.
He has the perfect hands-on understanding of what has made the Giltinis a breakout success in their first season as a Major League Rugby club.
Hoiles has signed a three-year deal to lead the club when he steps up from his current role as assistant coach in charge of the forwards and defence.
“I’m super excited about this opportunity and feel I’ve got a bank of lessons learnt from helping to find players and set up the program at the Giltinis,” Hoiles said.
“I’m very appreciative of all I’m still learning from Darren, who has a great eye for detail as a coach and is very good with people.
“He continues to create a very positive team environment where you work hard for success but can also have fun.
“I know how hard a decision it was for Darren to go with the NSW Waratahs in Australia for next season but I also know they’ve got themselves a really good coach.”
Hoiles played 16 Tests for Australia’s Wallabies and more than 100 Super Rugby games for the Waratahs and ACT Brumbies over an 11-year playing career (2004-15), with many of the matches with Giltinis starting fly-half Matt Giteau and General Manager, Adam Freier (pictured below)
Hoiles knew he wanted to making coaching a career long before his two-and-a-half years as assistant coach with Australia’s men’s sevens team and his Giltinis’ post.
Current Giltinis Head Coach Darren Coleman further added.
“Steve has a highly intelligent football brain. He has the respect of the playing group, a really strong leadership group to work with and this continuity for the Giltinis is a smart move.”
Hoiles said his full focus was on helping Coleman and the Giltinis finish the season with a bang with the play-offs looming after next Saturday’s match against Utah Warriors on the road.
