JP Smith grew up in South Africa and rose through the Western Province academy ranks as a front rower. Smith featured for the Western Province side in the Vodacom Cup as a young player before he and twin Ruan both moved to Australia in 2010. It was in Australia where the pair found their professional opportunities, roughly three years later. In 2013, JP was part of the wider Brumbies group travelling to New Zealand and South Africa for the 2013 finals and was named in their squad ahead of the 2014 season.
JP made his Super Rugby debut in the 2014 season against the Hurricanes and went on to play 12 games that season. He added to that tally in 2015 before returning to South Africa, playing in the Currie Cup for Western Province and making three appearances for the Stormers.
Smith returned to Australia for the 2018 season and joined the Reds, reuniting with his twin. He played 13 matches for Queensland in 2018 and 2019, stamping himself as one of the form props in Super Rugby, before injuries and the rise of youngsters limited his chances in 2020.
He and brother Ruan have a growing Boerewors and Biltong business called Bros Braai.
