Born in American Samoa, Pago Haini is a strong-running backrower who has been hardened by years of New Zealand club rugby in Wellington as well as MLR experience. The first alert of Haini’s American rugby nationality came early in 2017 when he was drafted into the USA men’s sevens team as injury cover in Wellington and Sydney for World Series tournaments. That led to half a season of club rugby with Santa Monica in 2017-18 and put him on the radar of MLR clubs.
He had his first taste of MLR with the Houston SaberCats (2018) and played the 2019 exhibition season with the newly-formed New England Free Jacks. He’s accustomed to the heavy hitting of NZ rugby and most recently played a full club season for Marist St Pats in Wellington in 2020.
“Pago” is short for “Pagopagohokma” which honours his birth in American Samoa’s port capital of Pago Pago where his parents were church ministers.
