Ruan Smith grew up in South Africa before moving to Australia with his family in 2010. Ruan played for the Western Province, along with twin JP, in South Africa before graduating into the professional ranks in Australia. Ruan made his Super Rugby debut in 2012 for the FOrce, playing two games for the Perth club. He was signed to the Brumbies’ extended squad for the 2013 season, playing four years with the ACT outfit.
Smith moved to Japan after the 2015 season and played three seasons with Toyota Verblitz. The front rower initially signed with Japanese Super Rugby franchise the Sunwolves for the 2018 season but instead ultimately returned to Brisbane to be closer to his family. Smith played for the Reds in 2018 and 2019, teaming up with twin JP and helping ensure the Reds scrum was among the most consistent in the competition. Ruan signed with the Melbourne Rebels for the 2020 season but ultimately finished the year back in Queensland, reuniting with JP in Brisbane.
